Passionate about your work?

I am currently doing some career mentoring for a communication lead in a large organisation, and this week we talked about what drives them. One of their key drivers was "being interested in and engaged in the work they are doing".

This made me think about the times when I have done great work, and every time it was when I was passionate about the subject. Marketing a former coalfields area to attract new business and jobs, devising hard hitting anti-stigma campaigns to challenge the myths about mental illness, or redesigning a service to provide better care to more people with cancer - those where all times when I was truly passionate about the work I was doing and it resulted in great outcomes.

All the small businesses I have met in recent weeks have had one thing in common - their owners have all been passionate about what they do, whether that was selling clothes, designing social media advertising, planning bespoke holidays, or making quality sausages.

When I decided to set up my own business - Sentry PR - I thought hard about the purpose of my company and it came down to two simple things - to work with great people and to do work I am passionate about - and so far that's what I've managed to do.
