Good communication = happy staff?

The recent CQC report that reflected on all the hospital inspections it has carried out across England highlighted the strong links between organisational cultures and high performing organisations.

There is a lot of research about how effective staff communication can not only reflect an organisation's culture but also positively influence it. And I have seen the difference that effective communication can have on how staff feel about the organisation in which they work.

Staff who feel communicated and engaged with, who have opportunities to ask questions and influence how the organisation operates, are generally more positive about their employers than those who work in organisations where staff are only told "what they need to know" and have few opportunities to contribute to how the company ticks.

Contented staff are more productive and stay in an organisation longer than unhappy staff. And when you may be looking to recruit and retain staff with scare skills, fostering effective two-way communication with your employees makes good business sense.

Developing effective communication takes commitment from leaders, but it doesn't have to be complicated. Regular opportunities for employees and bosses to meet face-to-face, backed up with clear written information, is the foundation of effective internal communication.

Advances in electronic communication mean that even multi-national companies can manage regular face-to-face discussions with their staff - and leaders thinking of improving internal communication may be surprised at the benefits it can bring to their business.

No-one has the monopoly on good ideas and staff on the front line often have lots of practical suggestions for ways to improve their service or increase productivity and efficiency - leaders just need to take the time to listen.
